Wilson Shieh Studio

When I look at Wilson Shieh Studio, I will pay more attention on why Wilson will create his studio firstly ?

He said that he wants to put life into art and he wants to put art into life. Therefore, he opens his studio to create his art works. Moreover,  his art works mainly relates to our daily life.

These two photos show that his art works relate to our daily life, such as art and polictic or art and education.

In the left hand side, the photo shows that the meaning of education. He said that we need to study because we need to get knowlegde. In addition, We must get a high mark in examination. It shows the social fact through his art works. If we do not study hard, we cannot compete wit others.

In the right hand side, He expresses the relationsip and connection between art and politic. He thinks art is a tool to express a sense for politic. Artist can express his own idea through art for making society better. Artist can participate different political events through art.

We can see that Wilson's art works mainly focus on the connection between art and life. I really appreciate his belief and concept in his art works because I think art and life cannot be divided into two parts. Art only is a picture. It is not meaningful. I would like to ask the aim and concept of art works indeed reflects the change of life and era. Art must have relationships with life. Otherwise, art works lack his social function in the world.

Art Hotel Art Fair 2013

Art Hotel Art Fair is a special Art Exhibition. It shows art works from different countries, including Japan, Korean, Hong Kong, China and British.

In many artworks, I choose two art works to write my art review because I think these two art works are quite interesting and meaningful.

The first one is "Tycoon paintings" by Li Yi Bing.

What does Da Kuan mean ? It used to describe a group of noveau- riche who has made it up the social ladder financially yet handicapped in social etiquette and attire. In the Tycoon series, all his characters seem deep in their thought probably on how to make it bigger enconomically. They indeed desperately need these days.

I appreciate this type of art works because it is not only show art aesthetics. Moreover,  art works can express artist's ideas and messages. It is very important because we will clearly understand the concept and aim of art works more. In this case, when we look at the baby, what do you think? you only think that baby is so cute. When we look at the action or shape of baby, he is very ignorance and immature indeed.

The second one is "The season of love" by Narate Kathong.

The Season of Love - Feeling
                                                            oil and acrylic on canvas

Narates's art works always evoke s sense of peace and tranquility. The cheerful and vibrant colors of his paintings style capture viewer's attention and allow one to immerse into the majestic composition , as though being transported to a surreal, yet nostaigic ground.

When I look at his art work " The season of love",  I feel very conformtable and warm.  he may be use the cheerful and vibrant colors to make his art work better.  Moreover, I think his art work can attract people attention. It is very sucessuful because when an art work is appreciated by people, it proves that its existing value. Not only me, his art work have gained tremendous attention from many art lovers and collector worldwide.

A Big Family

1995

                                                                      Oil on canvas

Why I have been tangled in the past ?

"A Big Family" is one of the favourite painting Gallery from Zhang Xiaogang. I love this art work because it can show the whole picture of Chinese traditional family. I appreciate his painting style. In seires of a big family, He painted in black and white background. Xiaogang’s " A Big family " convey individual identity through their unalterable physical features: too big heads, tiny hands, long noses, and subtle alterations in hairstyle give clues to intimate characteristics and stifled emotions. In addition, He adds scars to his oil on canvas.  He indeed can express a bad relationship and hatred emotion between tradition family in 60- 70's.

Zhang Xiaogang has a long process of reflection before he painted "a big family". With "85 New Wave Incident "completely passed and China further opened up local market, Art in international exchanges began more and more in China in 1992. Chinese citizens began to think more about the location of the development of Chinese contemporary art. Under this premise, Zhang Xiaogang has a profound introspection. After that he consciously finds his own identity and the feeling of art, as well as the connection between art and life, the problem of Chinese cultural relationship. In 1993, from old photos of his parent, he read a lot of things and it is very interesting. Therefore, he drew a family picture and he painted his life which is directly related to the human and material. In 1994, he finished his Gallery which called " A Big family " .  The Gallery is more popular in arts community quicky.  In 1995, "A Big Family" is posted in 46th Venice Biennale, Venice.

Art Review ~ 36 Calendars

"I live in Art and art lives in me" By Song Dong

I visited this exhibition in Quarry Bay on 2 February, 2013. It called 36 Calendars and it is co- presented by Asia Art Archive and Mobile of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority. The exhibition shows Song Dong in re-writing the last 36 years of history calendars from 1978 to 2013. These calendars build on Song's longtime investigation into socio- political history, individual experience and art history. Song Dong intentions in the 36 Calendars project are based on very personal perspectives rather than objective and precise memories of the past. The calendars document his encounters with different people, objects and event from 1978 to 2013.

On 21 January 2013, Song Dong met 432 members of the public in this exhibition space to assist him in completing the project. Each participant was given a month from the calendar sketched by Song Dong . They were invited to add, change or edit the drawing according to their own memories of the historical event. Why Song Dong will prepare the project of 36 Calendars it is because he believes everybody can have their own way to experience time and as the world is basically defined by different concepts of  time. When he has the privilege of being an Artist in residence at Asia Art Archive in 2011, he found material connected to his personal growth which was dear to him. Therefore, he decides to draw 36 Calendars for exploring socio- political history, individual experience and art history. Finally, Song Dong spent more than a year realising this project.

Song Dong's 36 calendars document his encounters with different historical event.
1: The One-child policy  how to effect the population structure of Chinese society.

2: Song Dong expresses his personal emotion in June Fourth Incident.
He cries and he feels angry because he listens to gunshots and he sees the blood. He hopes everyone can be healthy. It reflects that Song Dong intentions in the 36 Calendars project are based on very personal perspectives.

3: Facebook how to effect the development of social network .
How does Song Dong evaluate Facebook?
He thinks Facebook can solve the interpersonal problem even if he does not use it.

Personally, I agree to history and art is inseparable. Song Dong describes socio- political history, individual experience and art history through drawing 36 Calendars. It reflects that art is a good tool to reserve our historical memories and fragments of life. Moreover, I like his motto. He said that " I live in Art and art lives in me" because I think each artists must have the mission for art. I think Song Dong is very enthusiastic in art. For example, I appreciate that he spends more time to finish the project of 36 calendars. It is not easy for him to met 432 members of the public in this exhibition space to assist him in completing the last 36 years of history calendars. We can see that he is ambitious in art.

Overall, the exhibition of 36 Calendars is very interesting because these calendars remind me some historical memories and fragments of life. Finally, I clearly understand life is the part of art and art is the part of life.
